Group sequential stopping rules are often used to address the ethical and efficiency concerns inherent in the conduct of clinical trials. The selection of a stopping rule should typically be driven by clinical and scientific concerns, but as the use of a stopping rule can have major impact on the statistical credibility of the trial results, it is important to consider those issues prior to the start of the trial. In this talk I review the statistical issues that arise in the use of sequential sampling.
